Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
